Tanner's love for the outdoors and nature was immediately formed growing up in his hometown Hamilton, Montana. He is an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman. In college Tanner attended the University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana, where he played basketball and earned a business degree.
He had always loved drawing growing up and he eventually started painting when he was in high school. Because of his Montana roots and love for the outdoors, Tanner took a special interest in painting wildlife. While still in college, his passion for painting continued to grow and he started doing commissions and got his paintings into galleries in Montana and Colorado.
When Tanner first started painting, the main subject he loved to paint was trout. The beauty of trout and the complexity of the iridescence and colors that the different species radiate fascinates him. That's why trout are still one of his favorite subjects to bring to life on canvas to this day.
Tanner's wildlife paintings strive to capture the deeper essence of nature. Each piece is meticulously crafted in a unique hyperrealism style using acrylic paints. His painting process is precise and time consuming so that the details and personalities of the wildlife in their natural environments are highlighted on the canvas.
Tanner's painting style creates soft out of focus backgrounds, while putting hyper focus on the subject with bold brush stroke details. The relationship between soft and hard focus creates depth and harmony within each piece.
