Artist Statement
To become fluent in a material, an artist's voice and medium must merge.
This connection is rarely immediate; rather it develops through years of experimentation with techniques, processes, and products. with techniques, processes, and products.
My educational background in color psychology and consulting in the architectural field led me to concrete. I gained a comprehensive understanding of color mixing, color balance, and industrial materials.
These experiences shaped me into a colorist and fueled my desire to create artwork that is both richly textured and distinctive. Over time, the union of voice and material has evolved into a unique visual language. Concrete has always fascinated me because of its similarities to fired clay both are earthy, elemental materials capable of conveying strength and subtlety.
I use cement in a painterly manner, developing my own custom mixtures by combining cement, plaster, and dry pigments. This process gives my finished works a sculptural dimension. The porous surface allows for unexpected markings and expressive textures. Years of exploration have deepened my understanding of this medium and expanded its creative possibilities. Through this ongoing relationship, ementI have become” fluent in cement.”
