I paint in oil on birch panel, a time-honored method used by Renaissance masters. My chosen subjects are “intimate landscapes”: they are unique, closely observed macro views of nature that invite the viewer to marvel at the structure of natural things that exist around us. My paintings ask the viewer to take a few moments and consider the subtle complexity contained within these mundane and mostly overlooked elements of nature as we pursue our daily lives on this beautiful planet that we are entrusted with.
My body of work has grown to encompass an entire philosophy of beauty embodied in the Intimate Landscape series. I paint to challenge this culture’s notions of beauty and perfection by concentrating on these ordinary subjects found underfoot: rocks, sand, water, leaves, and shells.
